In this week’s lesson you will learn how to sew a blind hem and see how to use several different types of hem tapes. Blind hems are generally used on dress pants or slacks and are done in a way where the stitching is nearly invisible. You will learn how to stitch the hem, and most importantly, how to fold the fabric before the hem can be stitched. You will also learn how to use fusible hem tape as well as how to sew in both fabric and lace hem tape.
In this week’s lesson you will learn how to finish seam allowances using both flat felled and French seam methods. A French seam finishes the seam allowance while you construct your project, whereas a flat felled seam is used once a project has been completed. You will learn when to use one method over the other depending on the project, the fabric being used, and the desired finished look.
In this week’s lesson you will learn how to bind seams and hem. Binding a hem is a great way to add extra embellishment to a project and can also be used to make a fabric edge stiffer. Bound seam allowances, also known as Hong Kong finishes, are a great way to secure a seam allowance and make the inside of a garment look just as good as the outside.

Description

Hems and seam finishes are an important part of all sewing projects and are used on everything from home décor to accessories, and nearly all garments. The type of hem or seam finish you choose to use can depend on the project, the fabric being used and the overall desired look. In this class you will learn how to sew a blind hem, how to use hem tape and bind hems and how to finish seam allowances using French seams, flat felled seams, and bound seams which are also referred to as Hong Kong seams or finishes. Hems can be used to not only finish a fabric edge, but can add weight, stability and even help add length if necessary. You will learn how to bind hems in ways that can add stiffness or be used as more of an embellishment. You will also use several different types of hem tapes, including fusible, fabric, and lace. Hem tapes can be a great option if you are short on the amount of fabric you have to fold under to create a hem. Depending on your project, you may need to finish all your seam allowances. In this class you will learn how to do this as you sew using a French seam, and how to do it after a seam has been stitched using both a flat felled and bound seam method.

Ashley has sewn for years. Her mother taught her at a very young age. When first starting out, she stuck to mastering commercial patterns before venturing into creating her own. Her patterns have been featured in Sew News, Sew It All, and she has even been on Sew It All TV. Quilting is somewhat new to Ashley, but she dove in head first – coming up with an original design for her first quilt that included curved seams and hand appliqué! She was even lucky enough to have it featured in one of Quilty’s "This is My Quilt" episodes. Ashley loves all things crafty, from sewing to knitting, crochet to quilting, and everything in between. When she isn’t working on a new project or learning a different technique she loves teaching her passion to others.
