A-Line Skirt: Make an Easy A Line Skirt Pattern

Skirts can be great quick and easy garment sewing projects. In this tutorial, learn how to draft an A line skirt pattern based on your own measurements and then make a bias cut skirt with a fold over elastic waistband- Ellen March shows you how.

Pattern

Before you can sew or cut out any fabric you must first draft an A line skirt pattern. Ellen explains what measurements you need to take in order to draft the pattern, including the waist, hip and skirt length measurements. She then explains how to add extra width to the waist and hip measurements to account for both seam allowance and ease. When drafting this A line skirt pattern, Ellen used a woven interfacing as the pattern template. If woven interfacing isn’t on hand, Ellen gives several other pattern template material options you can use including pattern paper, tissue paper and others. Fabric

Once the A line skirt pattern has been drafted the fabric pieces can be cut out. Ellen designed this skirt to be cut out on the bias, which gives the skirt a lot of stretch. She explains what the bias is and how to mark it on the pattern piece. She then explains how to find the bias of the skirt fabric and demonstrates how to line up the pattern pieces and cut them out.

Construction

For the main construction of this skirt Ellen uses a serger, but explains that a conventional sewing machine can be used as well. Once the side seams of the skirt have been sewn Ellen explains how to attach the waistband to the skirt. She uses fold over elastic for the waistband which can be easily attached to the top of the skirt with a simple zig-zag stitch. Finally she shows how to hem a skirt to finish off the project.
