Description

Learn how to make a bowl cozy using fabric and batting, to protect your hands from a hot— or cold— bowl. This project is fast, easy, and so useful that it makes for a great gift. Nicki LaFoille shows you how, step by step.

A bowl cozy is essentially a hot pad that your bowl sits in, so you can hold a bowl comfortably even when its contents are an extreme temperature. By using all cotton materials — cotton fabric, cotton batting, and cotton thread — this bowl cozy is made microwave safe. Set the bowl in the cozy before it goes in the microwave, so when you remove the bowl from the microwave you don’t risk burning your fingertips. This is especially great for younger members of the household, so they can heat up their own food safely.

This bowl cozy requires minimal supplies, only two 10” squares each of fabric and batting. Nicki demonstrates how to round off the corners of the squares to achieve a smooth, almost flower-like petal shaped bowl cozy. Then you will learn how to quilt the fabric and batting pieces together, and how to mark and stitch the darts that are required on each layer to give the bowl cozy its shape.

Next Nicki demonstrates how to stitch the two layers together, pivoting at the corners and leaving an opening large enough to turn both layers right side out. After turning the project right side out, Nicki shows you how to close up the opening with a line of topstitching roughly ⅛” away from the edge.

In just a few minutes, and using fabric scraps from your stash, you can stitch this cute, useful bowl cozy.
