Create any style of detachable collar you can imagine using the free patterns, simply add embellishments, such as piping, trim, lace, sequins, beads, etc. Nicki begins by discussing the free pattern download, plus the supplies needed to complete this project, including fabric, embellishments, closures, and interfacing.
Nicki demonstrates how to mark and staystitch what will be the opening left for turning the collar right side out, and then how to align and baste the collar closure, whether it is a ribbon or an elastic loop. Then, you will learn how to stitch the collar layers together using directional sewing to help keep the bias curves from stretching out of shape.
Nicki then discusses how to trim, clip, and notch the seam allowances to ensure there will be no pulling or bunching when the collar is turned right side out. You will learn a pneumonic trick for remembering when to clip and when to notch outward and inner curves.
When the collar is turned right side out, Nicki then demonstrates how to press the collar for a crisp edge, tucking the opening seam allowances inside, and gives options for how to close up the opening in several different ways.
Nicki then discusses construction for the pointed collar. The process is exactly the same, except stitching the outer curve requires a pivot point. Nicki gives a trick for pivoting around the pointed corner to reduce bulk.
