Description

Learn how to make a firewood or yoga mat carrier using outdoor fabric, webbing, and dowels. Mary Beth Temple shows you how in just a few easy steps.

When carrying kindling, sticks or firewood logs into the house, a carrier can help make the job easier and less messy. This project also works as a yoga mat carrier, to hold and transport a yoga mat to and from yoga classes. Mary Beth discusses different types of sturdy fabrics that can be used to make a yoga mat carrier, and how the rectangle size can be altered based on the width of your fabric.

The two rectangles Mary Beth uses for the demonstration are 17”x42”. To make the firewood carrier, place the rectangles with right sides together and stitch the perimeter, leaving a centered opening on one of the sides. Clip the corners, then turn the fabric right side out through the opening. Press the edges, and press the seam allowances toward the wrong side at the opening. Topstitch the perimeter to close the opening. Fold the carrier short end toward the wrong side and topstitch per Mary Beth’s instructions to create the dowel pocket.

Mark a line 3” from each long edge along the length of the firewood carrier. Align the webbing outer edge with the line, making sure the handles are equal at each short end. Topstitch each long edge of each webbing side, stitching across the webbing just under the dowel pocket stitching line.

Mary Beth discusses different types of dowels that can be used for the project. Insert the dowel into the pocket and the carrier is complete!
