Quick Tips Sewing: Reduce Bulk in Double Fold Hem

Description

Learn how to reduce bulk in a double fold hem with this quick tip from Nicki LaFoille. When double folding a hem, such as a jeans or pants hem, bulk can accumulate at the side seams and reach nine layers of fabric to stitch through when hemming. Reduce this bulk and eliminate a lumpy hem using this quick tip.

This easy trick mitigates the layers of fabric that stack when double folding a hem. By simply clipping into the seam allowances at one of the foldlines and pressing the small section of seam allowances in the other direction, when folding the hem, you reduce the layers of bulk, making it easier to stitch across and eliminating unsightly bulk.

This is especially useful when stitching denim or other heavyweight fabric that might be difficult to stitch through many stacked layers.
