Quick Tips: Sewing Vinyl with Tissue Paper

National Sewing Circle Editors
Duration:   1 mins

Description

Learn a quick trick from Mary Beth Temple to prevent sticking when sewing vinyl.

To prevent the vinyl from sticking under the presser foot, use a Teflon foot, roller foot or walking foot. However, the vinyl may still stick to the bed of the machine. Plus, the slick surface of the vinyl can be difficult for the feed dogs to grab onto.

Mary Beth has a solution. Simply use a strip of tissue paper under the vinyl, between the vinyl and the machine bed. This prevents the vinyl from sticking to the machine bed, and also helps the feed dogs pull the vinyl under the foot.

When the seam has been stitched, the tissue paper has been perforated, and it simply tears away.

Hi, I'm Mary Beth Temple. And I like to do a lot of projects with vinyl. However, vinyl can be a little sticky and it's really difficult sometimes to get it to feed smoothly through the machine. Now, we can fix the problem on the top side by changing out our foot to a Teflon foot or a roller foot on a walking foot. But to solve the problem on the bottom, the easiest way is to put some strips of tissue paper under your work before you sew the combination of the tissue paper and the vinyl gives the feed dogs something to grip onto. So you can go ahead and make your seam like you normally would. And when you're done, all you have to do is rip that tissue paper off and your seam is neat and exactly where it needs to be. Now, you have a nice neat seam without jamming up your machine.
