Quick Tips: Using Fabric Glue on Upholstery Cord

National Sewing Circle Editors
Duration:   1  mins

Description

Use this tip from Mary Beth Temple to adhere fabric scraps to upholstery cord for making fabric or rope bowls.

Mary Beth suggests cutting fabric scraps into strips that are ½” to 1” wide, to whatever length is possible for the scraps. You can wrap the cord completely in fabric to create a fabric bowl, or wrap a small portion here and there to add a pop of fabric color to a rope bowl. Either way, Mary Beth suggests using a fabric glue stick to add glue to the beginning and end of the scrap strip to attach it to the rope before stitching the bowl together.

While some may suggest any craft glue stick will work, Mary Beth prefers to use a glue stick designed for use on fabric.

Hi, I'm Mary Beth Temple. And one of the things that I like to do with my scrap fabric is cut it into strips and make these rope bowls. I use cotton upholstery cord and strips cut anywhere from a half to an inch. And as long as they want to be, depending on what project they came from. Now, whether you want to cover your rope completely and have a fabric bowl or if you want to make a rope bowl and just have a little splash of color here and there, the easiest way to get everything prepared is to use a fabric glue stick. Now, I know some people will tell you to just get a regular glue stick. But my personal opinion is that gunks up your machine and it's not something I would do. So I put a lot of glue on one end. I'm gonna go ahead and wrap my cord making sure that there's no upholstery cord peeking out and I'm not worried about raw edges or anything like that. And then when I get to the other side, I'm going to give that a liberal dose of glue and then glue down my other end, whether you like to prepare ahead of time and put a whole lot of fabric on a rope or you like to prepare. As you go to see how the colors play out. Having that fabric glue stick right next to your sewing machine is going to make your life a lot easier.
