Rope Bowls with Scrap Fabric Embellishment
Mary Beth TempleDescription
For this project, some type of clothesline, rope or upholstery cord is required. Mary Beth prefers ¼” piping cord. You will also need a fabric glue stick to adhere the scraps. Clips can also be used but a glue stick offers a more secure hold.
First, cut the scraps into ½”-1”-wide pieces to any length. Ribbon or yarn can also be used to sew this rope bowl project.
Mary Beth demonstrates how to begin wrapping the fabric around the rope to encase the raw end. Then, she demonstrates how to wrap the fabric at an angle around the rope, covering the previous fabric edges. You can prep the entire length of rope for the bowl, or wrap at least one foot of the rope before beginning to stitch the rope into a bowl.
Beginning at the bottom center of the bowl, Mary Beth demonstrates how to coil the rope into a circle to form the base of the bowl. Mary Beth uses a straight stitch to secure the first few coils of the rope bowl base, then switches to a zigzag stitch to sew the remainder of the rope bowl.
Mary Beth discusses the stitch dimensions and options to customize and personalize the rope bowl, then demonstrates how to shape the bowl while stitching the rope together. Mary Beth also demonstrates how to finish off the bowl once it reaches the desired size.
Learning how to sew a rope bowl using fabric scraps is a great reason to hold onto those beautiful fabrics left over from other projects!
