Description

Learn tips for sewing fake fur to make your sewing room experience tidy and hassle free. Fake fur is a great fabric to use for costumes, cosplay, stuffed animals, and more, but it can be messy and difficult to sew. Mary Beth Temple shows you two different techniques to make sewing this unique fabric a breeze.

Mary Beth’s first tip is to use an electric hair clipper to trim the fur away from the seam allowances. This eliminates bulk at the seam and also helps keep the long pile of the fur out of your sewing machine and out of the seam. Also, be sure to sew in the direction the pile naturally trends toward. Fluff or comb the fur after sewing the seam to pull out any pile that was trapped within the seam.

Secondly, Mary Beth demonstrates another technique that does not involve cutting away the pile. Simply push the pile away from the cut edge of the fabric, and with both pieces right sides up, abut the edges against each other. Use a relatively wide zigzag stitch to catch each piece of fabric on the right and left needle swing, without overlapping the fabric edges.
