Description

Learn how to make an easy shrug using just rectangles. Nicki LaFoille walks you through it step by step. This simple shrug can be made using woven or knit fabric in varying weights. Use heavier weight fabric for a cozy shrug in cooler weather, or use lighter weight fabric for an easy summertime cover up. Nicki demonstrates how to sew this shrug using knit fabric, but also discusses slight changes you will need to make if using a woven fabric instead.

Nicki provides sample measurements for the shrug rectangle, sleeve rectangles, and collar strip for both an adult size shrug and a smaller child size shrug. These measurements for the shrug will fit most, but can be varied greatly, as it is very loose fitting. Be sure to double-check the measurements against your body before cutting, and alter any dimensions as needed.

Nicki demonstrates how to create the sleeve shape from the sleeve rectangle, and how to finish the sleeve hem. Then you will learn how to shape the sleeve opening to achieve a better fit when inserting the sleeve into the opening. Nicki demonstrates how to insert the sleeve into the shrug sleeve opening and how to match the sleeve seam to the bottom of the sleeve opening.

Use the same fabric or a coordinating fabric for the sleeve and collar rectangles.

Nicki discusses how to measure the shrug to determine the collar length and width. Then you will learn how to attach the collar to the shrug. Now your slouchy, comfy shrug is complete!
