Watermelon Slice Pillow
Nicki LaFoilleDescription
Nicki first demonstrates how to draw the pattern, starting with a 7 ½”x15” rectangle of paper. By folding this in half and drawing a curve, you achieve a symmetrical pattern for the inner red portion of the pillow. Once you cut out the red fabric, Nicki demonstrates how to add 1 ½” to the curved edge of the previous template to cut out the green “rind” piece.
In addition to two inner red pieces and two larger green pieces, you will need a 4” wide gusset to give the pillow dimension. Nicki recommends measuring the curved edge of the green piece to determine the length of the gusset.
Matching the centerlines, place the red fabric piece wrong side down on the right side of the green piece. Align white lace or other trim, such as ric rac or bias binding, over the raw edges of the red fabric along the curve.
Zigzag stitch the lace onto the fabric. Nicki then demonstrates how to use embroidery floss to stitch seeds onto the pillow.
Nicki demonstrates how to attach the gusset onto each curved edge of the pillow, leaving an opening at one lower edge for turning the pillow right side out.
A dart in the gusset upper edge is necessary to achieve the wedge pillow shape. Nicki demonstrates how to stitch a curved dart along the gusset and how to avoid pointed angles at the dart end.
After stitching the pillow upper edge, turn the pillow right side out through the opening, stuff with fiberfill, and use a slipstitch to close the opening.
