Description

Learn how to create a lined canvas tote bag with a reverse appliqué detail. Nicki LaFoille shows you how!

Reverse appliqué is a fun twist on the traditional appliqué fabric embellishment method. In traditional appliqué, the appliqué fabric is typically placed over the fabric to be embellished, while in reverse appliqué, the appliqué fabric is placed behind the main outer fabric, and the fabric is cut away to reveal the appliqué beneath.

Nicki provides the dimensions needed to create the tote bag, and discusses supplies, including twill tape for the handles, and suitable fabrics.

Nicki then discusses how to print out an appliqué shape, and add seam allowances to the outer edge. You can cut out your appliqué in one solid piece of fabric, or follow along with Nicki and piece together 2” squares to create a patchwork effect for the appliqué piece.

Once the patchwork shape is completed, trace the appliqué shape onto the right side of the tote fabric. Nicki demonstrates how to align the patchwork fabric behind the traced appliqué shape and pin along the traced line. Stitch over the traced stitching line using a straight stitch, or use a decorative stitch to add even more visual interest to your reverse appliqué tote bag.

Nicki demonstrates how to cut away the fabric from inside the appliqué shape to reveal the patchwork appliqué beneath. Then, follow along as Nicki shows you how to create the tote bag body, attach the straps, and insert the lining.

The last step to completing this fully lined canvas tote bag is to attach the twill tape handles.
